Nash Community College Announces Plans for New Building

Nash Community College has announced plans for a new building on the south side of its campus. In a recent meeting, Nash County Commissioners unanimously agreed to honor the College’s request for a $400,000 advance to be used for planning for a new 75,000 square foot Continuing Education building. College officials are working with Oakley-Collier Architects in Rocky Mount to complete the design for final approval to begin the bid process, with possible groundbreaking next summer.

“A new building will allow Nash Community College to grow in many of its Continuing Education programs, especially in public safety areas as we are looked upon as a local leader in those areas of study,” President Bill Carver said.

The new building will be completed in two phases -- phase one for a 55,500 square foot construction and phase two including more than 19,000 square feet -- and include amenities such as a pistol target range, basic law enforcement training classrooms, a 29,100 square foot multi-purpose room, lecture hall, classrooms and administrative areas.

Nash Community College began in 1967 as Nash Technical Institute and today serves over 13,000 students annually. The college’s first location was Benvenue High School and then moved to the former Stony Creek Elementary School after one year, later moving to its current location that was dedicated in 1975. During the early 1990s, the campus grew to include an expanded library and the connecting of buildings A, B and D by an enclosed mall. Construction of the Business & Industry Center and the Betsy B. Currin Child Development Center was completed in 1999. In 2001, the Myrtle Carter Henry Amphitheater and Julian B. Fenner Memorial Clock were unveiled. The College’s newest building, the Science and Technology Center, was dedicated on October 26, 2005.

Olivia Wells, 2010 National Merit Scholarship Winner

Rocky Mount Academy has announced that 19 members of the Class of 2010 were awarded college merit scholarships totaling $2.1 million. “We are so proud of our 42 seniors. One hundred percent of them are attending college this fall, and several of them had the good fortune to be given financial assistance because of their academic and personal achievements while at RMA,” Headmaster Thomas R. Stevens said.

Among the seniors who received merit scholarships was Olivia Wells, the only senior in Nash, Edgecombe or Wilson counties to be a National Merit Scholarship winner in 2010. “Being a National Merit winner opened many doors for Olivia, and she had a wide choice of schools who wanted her at their institutions.” In the end, she chose to attend the University of South Florida on a full tuition-free scholarship where she is considering a degree in Psychology, with the intention, right now, of entering medical school. She is the daughter of Vicki and John Wells.

Several other prestigious scholarships were given to RMA seniors this year, among them a Johnson Scholarship to Washington and Lee University and a Heritage Scholarship to Auburn University. “It is gratifying to see our students being recognized and given these opportunities. They have worked long and hard for this moment. We would be remiss not to thank their parents and the RMA faculty for working as a team to support our students in their learning experience. Both groups were there every step of the way, believing in their abilities and challenging them to do their best. We truly believe that it takes this partnership for a child to succeed in school,” Stevens commented. “The Class of 2010 has made their mark on RMA, and now we fully expect them to go out in the world and succeed in college and life. We look forward to keeping up with them and their contributions,” Stevens said.

Rocky Mount Academy was founded in 1968 for the purpose of providing an education for college-bound students that would include the knowledge and skills needed to success in college. Since its inception, over 95% of the graduates have gone on to attend college.

NCC Foundation Plans for 21st Annual Scholarship Golf Classic

Golfers participating in the 21st Annual Nash Community College Foundation Student Scholarship Golf Classic will have a chance to win a 2011 Honda CRZ Sport Hybrid as a hole-in-one prize from Davenport Honda. Prizes will be awarded to each flight’s first and second-place teams. Flights will be based on the total team handicap.

The Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce and Nash Community College, along with Premier Sponsors, Progress Energy and The Action Group HR, and Presenting Sponsor RBC Bank, join together to host the twenty-second annual Business Expo. Members of the area’s business community will take center stage on Tuesday, October 12, 2010 at Nash Community College Business & Industry Center for the annual Business Expo. More than 125 businesses are expected as exhibitors this year and will fill the Business & Industry Center main room, hallways and outside grounds as thousands attend Eastern North Carolina’s most exclusive trade show.

The Expo will officially open to the public at 10:00 a.m. and run through 6:00 p.m. on October 12 with area businesses set to make the right connections in promoting their products and services to Expo attendees. In recent years, the Expo has also generated some excellent business-to-business opportunities for exhibitors as well.

Kickball Tournament Brings Together Neighbors for A Worthy Cause

September 11th Kickball Tournament Brings Together Neighbors, Benefits American Heart Association and Rocky Mount’s W.A.R.M. Program

The public is invited to participate in and attend “KW’s Social Kickball Tournament,” a new charity event being held on Saturday, September 11th, starting at 8 a.m. at Englewood Park, 300 Old Mill Road in Rocky Mount. Participation in the tournament is $10 per person, with all registration fees being donated to the Start! Twin Counties Heart Walk and Weather Assistance for Rocky Mount (W.A.R.M.). This tournament utilizes a “social” concept, with teams organized randomly in order to give individuals a chance to meet new faces. “We picked kickball because it is a game that most people are familiar with through school, but are not necessarily skilled at,” said Kenneth Hunter, Rocky Mount Budget & Evaluation Manager and tournament organizer. “We will assign participants to teams the night before the event, and they will find out which team they are playing for when they arrive.”

Winter Assistance for Rocky Mount (W.A.R.M.) assists low income elderly, disabled or recently laid off customers to pay past due heating expenses. The WARM program was started in 1986 to help alleviate this crisis for eligible families. WARM can pay for wood, gas, coal, oil or electricity, with payments made directly to the fuel source provider. W.A.R.M. is supported solely on donations from the community and various sponsors, and the program is administered by the Salvation Army from January - May.

ECC Golf Tournament Celebrates 25 Years

In 1986, the Thomas Edmondson Agency team won first place in the Edgecombe Community College Foundation’s 1st Annual Golf Tournament. This year, the tournament celebrates 25 years.

The Edgecombe Community College Foundation is celebrating 25 years of golf later this month. The ECC Foundation’s 25th Annual Golf Tournament is set for Thursday, September 16, at Maccripine Country Club in Pinetops.

Since 1986, golfers have played in the annual tournament to raise money for ECC student scholarships. “As best I can determine, the tournament has raised about $400,000 for scholarships since day one,” says Karen Andrus, executive director of the ECC Foundation.

“The first tournament raised just over $2,000, and now annual proceeds average about $20,000,” she says. “Many Edgecombe students have benefited greatly from the generosity of our golfers.” This year, a lucky golfer will have a chance to win the hole-in-one prize – a 2011 Honda CR-Z Sport Hybrid Coupe EX. Keihin Carolina System Technology in Tarboro is donating the Honda. Other prizes also will be awarded.

The 4-Person Modified Superball tournament is one of the more popular tournaments in eastern North Carolina.

Serving on the 2010 golf tournament committee are Tommy Anderson, Karen Andrus, Jerome Creech, Lee Edmondson, Charlie Harrell, Kenny Honeycutt, Dr. Deborah Lamm, Earl Marshall, George McFadyen, and Donald Morris Jr.

Edgecombe Community College announces a stellar lineup of four well-known artists and ensembles in Season Six of its popular Edgecombe Performance Series.

• The Robert Cray Band
Saturday, October 30, 8 p.m.
Robert Cray is an American guitarist and singer who started playing guitar in his early teens. By the age of 20, Cray had seen his heroes Albert Collins, Freddie King, and Muddy Waters in concert and decided to form his own band; they began playing college towns on the West Coast. After several years of regional success, Cray was signed to Mercury Records in 1982. His third album release, Strong Persuader, received a Grammy Award, while the crossover single “Smokin’ Gun” gave him wider appeal and name recognition. With that success, Cray was often selected as an opening act for such major stars as Eric Clapton (who remains a friend to this day), and began playing larger venues as a solo artist. By the early 1990s, his name was immediately associated with his soothing, soulful voice, crisp, clean guitar work, and innovative modern blues sound. Edgecombe Community College Has Another Record Enrollment

Tim King, respiratory therapy instructor, leads a class at Edgecombe Community College. Student enrollment at the college has soared to 3,644 this fall, an all-time high and a 12% increase since last fall.

For the second year in a row, student enrollment at Edgecombe Community College is setting new records. A total of 3,644 students are attending the college this fall, an increase of 12% over last fall’s enrollment of 3,224 and an all-time high. Classes began last Friday.

The weak economy and high unemployment continue to contribute to high enrollment as students fill classrooms for retraining and learning new job skills. Pam Flanagan, 45, of Whitakers, was laid off from her job in industrial maintenance as a journeyman in mechanical and electrical. This fall, she is entering the radiography program at Edgecombe. “At my age, I didn’t want to go back to turning a wrench, and radiography is a good fit. I am used to diagnostics, and now I’ll be helping diagnose problems with patients.” At Edgecombe, creative scheduling and more class options also are enabling more students to attend classes, “We are open from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m., and we have classes meeting throughout the day and evening,” says Dr. Kristi Snuggs, vice president of instruction. “This semester, we have more students taking full loads, and we have been able to schedule them in blocks: 8 a.m.-12 noon, 1 p.m.-5 p.m., and 5 p.m.-10 p.m. This type of block scheduling is more convenient and efficient for our students, and it works better for our instructors, too.”

The college also has met the increased demand by adding sections of popular courses and by increasing the number of hybrid classes. Hybrid classes combine face-to-face instruction with an online component. A handful of retired employees returned to the college last week to assist with final registration and bookstore traffic, and they proved to be an invaluable asset. “These were all seasoned employees who worked at ECC for many years, so they came in with an understanding of our procedures and our system. They fit right in and went to work, and they made all the difference,” says Charlie Harrell, vice president of administrative services.

Long lines for student IDs and books moved steadily, and complaints from students were minimal. The phone system and college receptionists also rose to the challenge. According to Neil Baker, director of computer services, between 4,000 to 4,500 incoming and outgoing calls were logged each day last week, compared to a more typical 1,500 to 1,800 calls daily. Superior personal service was cited by a number of students who are attending ECC this fall, including Kate Giamarino, a second-year associate degree nursing student who lives in Rocky Mount. She applied to several community college nursing programs in the area, but Edgecombe was the only college that returned her calls. She holds two bachelor degrees from Lycoming College in Williamsport, Pennsylvania. “Everyone at Edgecombe bends over backwards to help you,” she says. “I have been very happy with my classes. They have been on par with or better than classes I took at Lycoming, which is a private college that costs $30,000 a year.”

Health sciences programs remain among Edgecombe’s most popular programs and are filled to capacity. These programs include:

Early childhood education, business, and college transfer programs also are popular. Cybercrime is the only program of its kind east of Greensboro. Historic preservation is unique among North Carolina community colleges.

Civil War Reenactment Comes to Historic Stonewall Manor

If you’ve ever had questions about the Civil War era, the time to ask about them is now… now being the weekend of September 10th – 12th on the grounds of Historic Stonewall Manor in Rocky Mount, North Carolina. Perhaps the bloodiest conflict in American history, there are many misconceptions about the Civil War, also known as the “War of Northern Aggression” or “The War Between States.” From secession, to states rights, slavery and taxation, there is just cause for each and every individuals opinion about this era in the great history of what is the United States of America. However, there is no better way to experience this history than to attend a living history/reenactment event and witness first-hand what troops went through, how they lived, what kept their spirits high, and how those that survived then gave us the ability to portray the time period today.

During the weekend of September 10th – 12th, the grounds of Stonewall Manor will be occupied by a Civil War encampment complete with reenactors, sutlers, blacksmiths, period cooking, music by the Tar River Dulcimers, a coin and paper money collection dating back centuries and a display of weapons from the Civil War. The event will include educational talks about Civil War military and civilian life, infantry musket loading and firing demonstrations, blacksmith tutorials, gentleman’s duels, a payroll robbery, capturing of a spy, and with any luck… a full scale battle! One might ask… why do people participate in events such as this? Who better to ask than those that are the participants.

Latham’s Battery (Branch Artillery) 13th N.C. c.o. F, A.N.V. will once again prepare for battle on the grounds of Stonewall Manor. Tony King, 1st Sergeant of Latham’s, is excited about the living history/reenactment weekend because it’s the location of one of their first events and holds a special place in their hearts with regards to the late Sam Lynn, their Colonel and the gentleman that started the group almost 15 years ago. Tony stated that while Sam’s memory is always with the group, Stonewall is a special place for Latham’s, and that their Colonel is missed dearly. With approximately 20 members in the group ranging from Captains to Privates, the group tries to stay as close to the roots that Colonel Lynn established as possible. Tony himself says that he has always enjoyed history, and starting reenacting in 1997. When asked if there was one thing that he would like people to know about the Civil War era, he stated “That the War was about STATES RIGHTS – not letting the Federal government control our private lives.” In addition to Latham’s Battery, the Civil War encampment will also include N.C. Naval Squadron, Mallett’s Battalion, Reilly’s Battery, and other civilian reenactors from all over North Carolina and Virginia.

Karen Mozingo has been participating in living history events for almost 10 years and says that her favorite part, aside from celebrating history, is meeting people from all over the country and making long-lasting friends. Her husband Bobby has been participating in these events much longer than she has, but the passion that they share for them is equal. Together they head up the Seven Springs Historical Association. Her husband Bobby, over the last 2 years, has shifted his reenactor role into more of a living history role, giving blacksmith tutorials and helping his wife Karen with her Sutler, the only one of its kind in eastern North Carolina and one of only a few in the state. In Civil War times a Sutler would have served as a traveling general store with any and every supply a soldier would need in an encampment, ranging from cookware and tent stakes to tobacco products, coffee and ammunition. The display that the Mozingo’s bring to the grounds of Stonewall is spectacular to say the least, and you’ll find treasures and period dated artifacts that can be purchased by the public. They love Stonewall, and enjoy the other groups that participate in the event each spring and fall. When asked what she would want the public to take away from visiting an event like this, Karen stated “a true appreciation for history and the trials and tribulations that these soldiers went through during war time.”

Stonewall will also be joined once again by the Tar River Dulcimers. The group has been together for 5 years, and no doubt are asked what a “dulcimer” is every time they play. When asked how they came up with their name, Connie Button, one of the instrumentalists stated, “We live in the Tar River Basin and a song we really like is about a river. There are several other groups in the area, so we wanted to make sure our name was reflective of a specific thing and something close to all of us.” What is a dulcimer you might ask? The term itself means “sweet music." Found mostly in the Appalachian Mountains, it is a true folk instrument made to resemble instruments the early Scottish settlers remembered from their homeland. Each instrument and each song played on the dulcimer represents a different story, and it is the haunting sweetness of this sound that captivates those who play the instrument as well as those that listen to the music it produces.

The Tar River Dulcimers enjoy participating in Civil War Living History events at Stonewall Manor not only because of the ambiance of the backdrop, but also because it coincides with the time period in which the dulcimer was at its height in the United States. “We thoroughly enjoy the questions, and it’s always a treat when someone knows the song and sings alongside of us!” Aside from Stonewall, you can also find this group gracing the halls of churches, the Dunn Center, festivals, nursing homes and other living history/reenactment events. The group encourages anyone interested in learning about the dulcimer or playing one to join them for their monthly gatherings on the every 4th Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at West Haven Presbyterian Church.

Major Mickey Jones, a collector of coins and weaponry, has been participating in Living History events for almost 9 years. While he attends less events than others, it goes without saying that his collection supersedes the expectations of all those that view it – and there are few other collections that can compare to it. It has been almost 50 years since the Major began collecting coins, developing a passion for it before he entered the first grade. While his collection dates back to 7th century B.C., he still remembers collecting his first coin. His love for coin collecting eventually led to his passion for history. With each coin collected, whether it had an object on it or the face of a famous king, the Major would then research the coin, trace its history and learn about its inception. This process has been the same for his hobby of collecting weaponry over the years.

The Major began collecting weapons in 1982, and to date has what he calls a “1,000 year collection” with some weapons dating back as far as 10th century A.D. “The History of the Shotgun” is his favorite display and he enjoys speaking to onlookers about the evolution of this weapon since its birth in 1700 all the way up until 1930; noting that his favorite has always been the rifled musket muzzle loader, or as he calls it, “the best of the best”. The Major stated that he enjoys the event at Stonewall because it’s close to home and draws an inquisitive crowd. His goal at these events – to try and instill his passions into others. When asked if there was one thing he may want people to know about this passion, he stated “I participate in these events in hopes that people will gain incentive to collect as I have done over the years. Until a child or an adult can see something like this and actually touch it, they may never know the true value and history behind it – exposure creates an interest. Just as we’ve seen things evolve over time, so has money as well as weaponry, and it’s neat to be able to witness that first hand.” Major Mickey Jones will have his coin collection and a weapons display of the Civil War era at Stonewall Manor for the Living History weekend for all who are interested in viewing it.

Saturday evening from 6-9 Stonewall Manor will also feature LIVE bluegrass compliments of the Fox Hollow Boys. The group, named after a local neighborhood, has been playing together for 4 years and is extremely talented. All of the members, including James Brown – Mandolin, Larry Taylor – Guitar & lead vocal, George Stewart – Banjo and Mike Edwards – Upright Bass, have developed a love for traditional bluegrass as a result of listening to the genre over the years, and their passion is exercised through their music. Mike Edwards, Upright Bassist, says that playing at Stonewall Manor is “extremely gratifying – we are all local residents and have a great love and respect for the Manor and its local history. It is a great honor to be able to keep it alive.” In addition to gracing the grounds of the Manor, you can also find the Fox Hollow Boys at other community, church and private events around the area. Thousands of North Carolinians to Join Forces For the Big Sweep

On Saturday, October 2nd, from 9:00 a.m. to 12 noon, thousands of North Carolinians will join forces to pick up litter from the state’s highways/roadsides, beaches, lakes, river, and streams. I want to personally encourage you and your church congregation, neighborhood group, community civic club, business, or school to participate in this year’s event.

Last year in Nash and Edgecombe Counties, over 400 volunteers armed with trash bags, pencils, and data cards hit the local streets/roads, lakes, rivers, and streams to collect and document types of litter and other debris. This year, we have already chosen several local sites for the cleanup including sections along the Tar River, area creeks and streams, boat landings, and parks near water.

In Nash County, volunteers will meet at Battle Park Boat Landing in Rocky Mount, to register, pick-up supplies, and received specific site assignments. In Edgecombe County, volunteers will meet at Riverfront Park Boat Landing in Tarboro, to register, pick-up supplies, and received specific site assignments.

Big Sweep offers a tremendous opportunity to learn firsthand about aquatic litter and its harmful effects. It also serves as a reminder that we are all stewards of our environment. I greatly appreciate your cooperation in spreading this message.

Rocky Mount to Host Statewide Law Enforcement Conference

After a very successful board meeting previously held by the North Carolina Fraternal Order of Police (NC FOP) in Rocky Mount in 2007 a goal was set to bring the full Conference to the Rocky Mount area by 2010. The goal was realized and the state association representing all branches of law enforcement officers has chosen Rocky Mount as the site to host its 4-day conference. The NC FOP Conference will be held at the Doubletree Hotel in the Gateway Center Plaza on September 22-25. Approximately 54 FOP chapters from across the State will be represented at the Association Board Meeting and Conference, which brings 300+ members and their families to the Rocky Mount area for some great southern hospitality and community offerings during the four-day conference.

The FOP Board Meeting will be held September 22 and 23, and the full Conference session will occur on September 24 and 25. The Board Meeting and Conference will involve the selection, vote and announcement of upcoming state level officers, as well as the conduction of the annual business of the organization.

The Nash County Visitor’s Bureau as well as many local businesses and organizations have come together to support the Conference as our State’s local law enforcement officials travel to our area to conduct the association’s business. Participants will enjoy some great hospitality and samplings of some of the area’s most notable products, services and amenities.

The Rocky Mount area will have a great opportunity to show appreciation for the tireless work and dedication of our law enforcement officials during their visitation. The concluding Conference Banquet – being held on Saturday, September 25, at the Gateway Convention Center, will see many of the areas government officials, civic and business leaders, and state elected officials present to recognize the dedication of those in attendance and their respective personnel.

The Fraternal Order of Police was established with a mission of safety and support to law enforcement officers and their families across North Carolina. NC FOP organization has four main goals; those being: 1) to advance the safety of North Carolina law enforcement officers and their families by sponsoring education which has the effect of providing information about law enforcement issues to the general public, including those matters involving crime prevention, crime detection and other methods of law enforcement, as well as about safety, education, job performance, ethical standards and general welfare of North Carolina law enforcement officers; 2) To encourage the exchange of information, and other community involvement, between law enforcement and North Carolina’s citizens about the above and other law enforcement and safety issues, so that there may be cooperation and coordinated assistance between and among law enforcement officers who work and reside in North Carolina, local jurisdictions and the citizens of North Carolina; 3) To assist the children and spouses of North Carolina law enforcement officers who have been killed or permanently disabled in the line of duty by providing funds so that they may complete their education studies in appropriate post-secondary educational institutions, including college and vocational training, with grants and scholarship awards made through the recipient’s educational institution; and 4) to assist North Carolina law enforcement officers with educational opportunities for the advancement of their careers.

The first day back to school can be a source of anxiety for both children and parents as they adjust to new routines, new teachers and friends, forthcoming homework assignments, and ultimately, tests. One child may work well at a desk with quiet music in the background while another functions better spread out across the floor in complete silence. Parents can assist in recognizing when a student works best and create a schedule around their child's learning style.

3) The Ultimate Objective
When it's time to hit the books, parents can lead their children to critically break down the information or assignment before it breaks down the students' self-esteem. Discuss why she is reading a particular chapter or working on a specific assignment. What kind of questions will be answered? What kind of test might be given about this material? Take the time to explain the purpose of going through this process of learning and how this study method will help her succeed.

4) Celebrate Achievements
Don't wait until your child brings home an "A" to celebrate. Show him that you are confident in his abilities, and reward the little things. Reinforce not just excellence but also improvements and progress. These are all signs of a strong study skills foundation, one step at a time.

5) One on One
Individual instruction can help develop strong study skills, particularly if your child needs increased attention. Maintain regular communication with your child's teacher because most teachers will know whether your child has an underlying problem with study habits.

Nash-Rocky Mount Public Schools Beginning Teachers, Class of 2010

Nash-Rocky Mount Public School System recently welcomed 40 beginning teachers as they launch their careers in education with NRMPS. The new educators received a wealth of hands-on teaching materials as well as helpful tips from veteran educators during the 3-day orientation and training session held at the Country Inn and Suites of Rocky Mount.

The 2010 new teacher orientation Beginning Teacher workshop focused on instructional strategies and educational resources to help ensure a successful school year for all the new teachers. Topics included: Creating an Exciting Learning Environment; Teaching with Technology; Using Data to Improve Instruction; Developing Classroom Management Strategies; Developing Good Communication Techniques; and Cultivating Positive Behavior in the Classroom.

Twenty-Ninth Annual Day for Wesleyan Is September 21

Rocky Mount Mayor David Combs has proclaimed September 21 as official “Day for Wesleyan” throughout the city. Volunteers for Wesleyan’s annual fundraiser will call on businesses and individuals to ask for gifts to the college. Funds will help support ongoing needs, including academic programs, athletics, library resources, technology, and scholarships for deserving students.

NCC Foundation Has Successful Year

For the 2010-2011 academic year, the Foundation will award over $180,000 academic and need based scholarships. In addition, over $10,000 in grants will be provided to faculty and staff for program innovations, instructional enhancements, and hands-on learning.

Chamber Endorses Conference Tournament Bid

The Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce Board of Directors has unanimously approved a resolution to attract a future conference tournament of the USA South Conference.

A bid for the area to host the 2013-2014 spring events is being prepared by N.C. Wesleyan College, a member of the conference. The City of Burlington NC, which has no conference member, has hosted the tournament for several years.

The event would attract over 700 athletes and their families and friends and would have a significant impact on the local hospitality industry and the overall business community. As a representative of the Organizing Committee named by NC Wesleyan President Jim Gray, The Chamber will play an active role in recruitment of the tournament.

Following is the resolution passed by the Chamber board.

Whereas: The Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce has learned of the possibility of the Twin County region serving as host of a future USA South Athletic Conference Tournament…and

Whereas: North Carolina Wesleyan College is a member of said conference and desires to serve as the “Host” member institution for this major event…and

Whereas: Such success would bring great distinction to our region and the potential for a significant capital infusion through the hospitality industry…and

Whereas: The City of Rocky Mount and the Twin County area have a strong track record in athletics event promotion having hosted the prestigious Atlantic Coast Conference Golf Championship for 10 consecutive years…and

Whereas: There is great community-wide support to host this 4-day event…

Therefore Be It Resolved:

That the Board of Directors of the Rocky Mount Area Chamber of Commerce does heartily endorse a proposal to the Conference for our Twin County region to host such an event and did vote unanimously at its regular monthly meeting to support such a proposal and assist in any way possible.

Two New Restaurants Under One Roof Open in Rocky Mount

Scott and Theresa Morrison, restaurateurs from upstate NewYork, are proud to announce the Grand Opening of their “Two Restaurant Concept” under one roof at 501 Old Mill Road, Rocky Mount, across from Englewood Park.

Seraphina’s Ristorante offers delicious Italian American cuisine cooked to order. Entrees such as Veal Piccata, Stuffed Eggplant Parmesan and Seafood Marinara are offered in an elegant, white table cloth, yet homey atmosphere delivered with impeccable service. Entrees range in price from $9.49 to 19.99 and include a salad with each meal. Reservations are accepted but not required.

This 82-seat facility, which opened June 22nd, offers a fantastic beer and wine menu from around the world. Plans to offer mixed drinks are in the works and will be implemented soon. Leadership Rocky Mount 2010-2011 Class Registration Now Open

The 2010-2011 Leadership Rocky Mount program will begin in September and registration for participants is now open. The nine-month program is designed to develop community-minded leaders for area businesses as well as young leadership for the Rocky Mount community – leadership that is mindful of issues that impact our area, our businesses and our citizens; leadership that will set the stage for building a sound future for Rocky Mount.

The annual program begins in September with a welcome reception and team building day, followed by one-day class sessions each month - October through May, and concludes with a graduation banquet. Program participants receive a thorough study on our community, its history, its challenges and opportunities, and the many aspects of our area that impact quality of life. This study – whether participants are lifelong residents or newcomers to our community, is beneficial both for our business community and for the participant’s personal development.

Many LRM participants are young professionals. Since the program was restarted in 2001, there have been a great number of LRM graduates that utilize their development and continue serving the community through organizations like YPN – the Young Professionals Network. Nash Community College Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) Cadets Graduate

Seven cadets recently graduated from Nash Community College’s thirty-first Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) class. During the twenty-seven week training, students learned essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county, or municipal governments, or with private enterprise.

The program utilizes a combination of physical and classroom state commission-mandated topics and methods of instruction. General subjects include criminal, juvenile, civil, traffic, and alcohol beverage laws; investigative, patrol, custody, and court procedures; emergency responses; and ethics, community relations and more.

During a recent graduation ceremony, NCC Instructor and Rocky Mount Police Department Sergeant Michael A. Whitley addressed the graduates. "Be compassionate; reflect back to the reason that you wanted to become a police officer. Most of you would probably say you wanted to help people. Always remember the golden rule. Be kind; don't allow your anger or frustration to show in your words, your facial expressions or your body language. Hold your tongue. Be humble. Show that you are a true warrior," he said.

To graduate, students must successfully complete and pass all units of study, which include the certification examination mandated by the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission and the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Education and Training Standards Commission.

Ribbon Cutting for Max & Molly's Restaurant

A Ribbon Cutting was held for Seraphina’s Ristorante and Max and Molly’s Restaurant on Tuesday August 3, 2010. Mayor David Combs and the owners, Scott and Theresa Morrison were surrounded by Chamber Staff, Board Members, City Council Members and Chamber Ambassadors.

Scott and Theresa Morrison restaurateurs from upstate New York are proud to announce the Grand Opening of their “2 Restaurant Concept” under one roof at 501 Old Mill Road, Rocky Mount, across from Englewood Park.
Seraphina’s Ristorante offers delicious Italian American cuisine cooked to order. Entrees such as Veal Piccata, Stuffed Eggplant Parmesan and Seafood Marinara are offered in an elegant, white table cloth, yet homey atmosphere delivered with impeccable service. Entrees range in price from $9.49 to 19.99 and include a salad with each meal. Reservations are accepted but not required. Seraphina’s opened June 22nd with 82 seats. They currently offer a fantastic beer and wine menu from around the world. Plans to offer mixed drinks are in the works and will be implemented soon. Seraphina’s accepts private groups for lunch with pre booking; catering is also available. Seraphina’s is open for dinner Monday thru Friday 5pm to 10pm.

The second concept Max and Molly’s Pizza, Pasta and Burgers opened with 120 seats on July 13th. Max and Molly’s is decorated in All American Café Style with booths and tables. Table service is offered with Pizza, Burgers, Grinders, Panini Sandwiches, Philadelphia style Cheese Steaks and Salads at very reasonable price points. Max and Molly’s is open Monday thru Friday for lunch 11am to 2:30pm and dinner 5pm to 10pm and on Saturday for dinner from 5pm to 10pm.

Beginning September 27, our Makes It Real tour will cross the state for ten rallies to celebrate North Carolina manufacturing, culminating with a rally at the Capitol with Governor Perdue, Friday, October 1.
