WHIG-TV Named February Small Business of the Month

The Small Business Division of The Chamber is pleased to recognize Herb Greenberg and WHIG TV as the February Small Business of the Month recipient. For many years our community knew Herb Greenberg in association with Rocky Mount Undergarment, and upon their business closure, he learned that a broadcast license had become available for the Rocky Mount area. Having spent some time dabbling in film work in the region, Herb found a passion in this field and this led to the vision for a community-oriented TV station that became reality in 1998 through Herb Greenberg’s investment - WHIG TV was on air.

Located at 1701 Sunset Avenue in the Power Plant, Herb and a few part-time associates began to build the local station that we know today. The community’s interest was aroused and Herb began building the vision of the station being an integral part of the community.

It was soon evident that WHIG TV had garnered a loyal following. In 2002 with expansion plans and the development of new programming Sandra Smith, Station Manager and WHIG’s first full-time employee was hired. Over the next several years more programming was added and more advertisers came on board, which built more revenue and saw additional employees added. Today the station has 7 part-time employees and 3 full-time employees as well as a full-slate of advertisers.

Further expansion in the past several years has seen the expansion to digital, live streaming on the world-wide web at www.whigtv.com, and video-on-demand service that features many community meetings and activities.

The station has lived up to Herb Greenberg’s vision of being a community-oriented TV station. If it’s happening in town - WHIG is covering it! If fund raising is going on - WHIG is impacting it with viewer interest and support. If there are new businesses or expansions, or ribbon cuttings or other activities – WHIG is covering it and sharing it with the community. WHIG TV itself is a fund raising partner with a number of groups such as the Fred E. Turnage Chapter of the American Red Cross; the Christian Fellowship Home; and the Relay for Life Auction.

Today the community enjoys such programming as Around Town with Jean Almand Kitchin; Business Focus with Lanny Shuff; The Morning Show hosted each day by local business people; Community Close-up featuring local non-profit and civic organizations sharing important information for community citizens; and of course, the famous Karaoke Night every Monday night.

Congratulations to Herb Greenberg, WHIG TV, for his vision and service to the Rocky Mount area and this well-deserved award!
